Another serious cultural institution has appeared on the map of Moscow: the AZ/ART Centre for Contemporary Art. The centre is housed in a historic seventeenth-century building on Maroseika. Its opening is marked by an exhibition, a joint project with the Foundation of the composer
Nikolai Karetnikov, entitled "Non-Obvious Intersections".

My congratulations to the AZ Museum and Natalia Opaleva on such a splendid occasion!

"Non-Obvious Intersections" is a subjective view of the possible points of contact, and the comparative kinship, between the creative methods, artistic means, imagery and subjects
of works by Soviet unofficial artists and composers of the second half of the twentieth century. The artists represented in the exhibition include
Anatoly Zverev, Yury Zlotnikov, Lev Kropivnitsky,
Valentina Kropivnitskaya, Lidia Masterkova, Yevgeny Mikhnov-
Voitenko, Vladimir Nemukhin, Dmitry Plavinsky, Oleg Tselkov and Mikhail Chernyshov.

The space in which the centre stands is very Moscow: the ancient vaulted halls convey the spirit of old Moscow, while the modern design reminds us that we live in a developing city with a cultural life that is at a rolling boil (though not scalding).
