# The General Synod of the Church of England Discussed Prayers for the Blessing of Same-Sex Couples

The subject is not new to the Church of England, but until now matters had never gone as far as publishing a proposed collection of prayers and Bible readings connected with same-sex services.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, however, chose to abstain in the vote on the prayers, explaining that the greater part of the communion around the world still upholds the traditional Christian teaching on marriage, while a minority has accepted blessings or marriage for same-sex couples. Unwilling to deepen this disagreement, Archbishop Justin Welby preferred to keep his vote to himself.

As for the minority campaigning to change the Church of England's understanding of marriage, the Archbishop of Canterbury hopes that they have arrived at the idea that their church's traditional teaching must change not lightly, but after long prayer and reflection on the understanding of human nature
