Just the other day one of the best-known works of Russian art, Ilya Repin's painting "Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan on 16 November [1581](https://www.theartnewspaper.ru/media/images/1%5FhgNjViP.width-1290.jpg?ref=theparnassian.com)", was returned to the Tretyakov Gallery after a large-scale restoration that lasted three years. I think everyone remembers the appalling news of May 2018, that a vandal had torn the painting in three places, hurling himself at it with a metal barrier post. The tears in the canvas led to delamination of the paint layer and to hidden damage, and compounded the problems with which several generations of restorers had been contending ever since the dismal attack on the picture in 1913, when an extensive restoration had to be carried out and the canvas relined.

Immediately after the news of the assault on Repin's painting, Herman Gref [announced](https://www.gazeta.ru/culture/news/2022/05/24/n%5F17799710.shtml?ref=theparnassian.com) that Sberbank would take on all the costs of restoring the legendary canvas and would pay for the purchase of the most modern means of protection for the museum's most valuable exhibits. And now, at last, we can see the painting in the splendour and the authentic colouring with which it appeared before viewers in 1885\. To gauge the scale of the expense, one must take into account not only three years of work and the complexity of the object, but also the number of specialists involved and the need to develop unique technological solutions and methods. Colleagues from the Tretyakov report that the restoration of the masterpiece involved a whole staff from the Tretyakov Gallery's restoration workshop, together with international experts.
