The musician Vladimir Tarasov has given the Lithuanian National Museum of Art more than 500 works by Soviet nonconformists. Tarasov, who was personally friendly with the authors represented in his half-century collection, will be remembered by future generations if only through the name of the collection, "The Museum of Friends of Vladimir Tarasov". The patron explains his gesture simply: many of the works were given to him by the artists themselves, and he simply could not sell them, so he decided to make these masterpieces of the era the property of his country and his fellow citizens, adding: "..the country's relationship with the Soviet past remains very complicated and, at best, ambiguous. For some, the very sight of the Cyrillic script provokes instant, instinctive revulsion... This collection will be a revelation for those who believe they know absolutely everything about Soviet culture. But all the more will it be a revelation for those who were born into freedom, who take freedom and democracy for granted, and suppose that totalitarianism, political repression and censorship are long since a thing of the past."
