A man in formal dress and a priest, photographed after a solemn liturgy, might well be heirs to the Austrian crown. Before us are the brothers of Habsburg-Lorraine, great-great-great-grandsons of Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria-Hungary. No great surprise, really, since the Habsburgs are today the largest house in Europe after the Bourbons. Archduke Eduard is Austrian ambassador to the Holy See and to the Order of Malta, while Brother Paul holds a high position in the church hierarchy, something like a territorial counsellor to the Papacy for Central Europe. The Austro-Hungarian Habsburgs still retain the right of succession to the crown, even though the monarchy was abolished in 1918; the family continues to make dynastic marriages with members of other aristocratic houses and remains loyal to the Catholic Church.
