The Fowler Museum returns 11 valuable artefacts to an Aboriginal community in Australia.

On 20 May the Fowler Museum at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) handed over 11 objects to the Lawrakia community in the Northern Territory of Australia. Among them are a headband made of kangaroo teeth and 10 glass spearheads, some of them more than 100 years old. These ceremonial objects, collected in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, have deep spiritual and cultural significance for the Indigenous people.

Some of the artefacts came to the museum in 1965 from the collection of the pharmaceutical magnate Henry Wellcome, the rest from private donors. Since 2021 the elders of Lawrakia, together with AIATSIS (the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies), have been working towards the return of the relics.

In 2024 the community plans to open a cultural centre to keep such objects in accordance with tradition.
