Civil war is breaking out in Italy. On one side stand the republicans, adherents of Garibaldi; on the other, supporters of the ruling Bourbon dynasty. Alain Delon plays Tancredi, nephew of the central character, Prince Salina, who embodies the aristocracy in the face of fatal change. Prince Salina is played by Burt Lancaster. In supporting episodes, the beauty Claudia Cardinale.

The educated and progressive Prince Fabrizio di Salina accepts the changes taking place heavily, yet with full awareness, whereas his young nephew Tancredi joins the ranks of the rebel Garibaldini, only to attach himself afterwards to the army of the King of Savoy…

Luchino Visconti's historical picture, besides acquainting us with the spirit of the age, allows us to plunge into the psychology of human relationships and into profound questions of morality, not to mention the eternal theme of man's place in history.
