The graves of the brothers Vincent and Theo van Gogh in the municipal cemetery at Auvers-sur-Oise, 30 km from Paris. Vincent van Gogh was buried here on 30 July 1890, the day after his death.

The local newspaper ran the following notice:

> “On Sunday, 27 July, a certain person named Van Gogh, aged 37, a Dutch subject, an artist, temporarily resident in Auvers, shot himself with a revolver in a field and, being only wounded, returned to his room, where he died on the third day.”

Friends bore the coffin to the cart. Some wept. Theodorus van Gogh, who adored his brother, who had always supported him in his struggle for art and independence, did not cease to sob bitterly… Outside, a scorching sun; we climbed the slopes of Auvers… to the cemetery, a small new cemetery strewn with new gleaming stones… Dr Gachet wanted to say a few words on the life of Vincent, but he wept so hard that he managed to utter only the most confused words of farewell… Theodorus van Gogh was crushed by grief.”

Theodorus, aged 33, died six months later in Holland after a long illness. In 1914 his widow decided to rebury the younger brother’s body beside the grave of the elder
