I was very lucky on Monday, the museum day, to find myself at the colossal Repin exhibition and, avoiding queues and crowds, to see 300 works gathered over 3 floors from 21 Russian and 7 foreign museums and 7 private collections: nothing like it has been seen for 25 years. My thanks to the Tretyakov Gallery for the invitation and for the project itself.

Here are the “Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks”, which Alexander III bought for 40,000 roubles; the graduation piece “The Raising of Jairus’s Daughter”, for which, together with the large gold medal, Repin received a six-year pensioner’s journey to Europe; the textbook “Religious Procession in Kursk Province”; Peter I’s sister, Tsarevna Sophia, with dishevelled hair and a bloated face, initially rejected by the public; the less frequently reproduced Jew at prayer; the stately portrait of Turgenev; and, naturally, “The Ceremonial Sitting of the State Council on 7 May 1901, the Day of the Centenary of Its Foundation”.
