Spain's Ministry of Culture Returns to Their Historical Owners Works of Art Seized by the Franco Regime.

The ministry has identified 5,126 such items, including paintings, sculptures, books and jewellery, which after the civil war of 1936–1939 were confiscated from private collections and handed over to museums and state institutions.

The initiative is being carried out under the 2022 Democratic Memory Law, which is intended to resolve the consequences of the Franco dictatorship. The programme of the law provides for the restoration of civil rights to persons whose ancestors were forced to leave Spain because of the situation in the country, the rehabilitation of victims of political repression, the exhumation of mass graves and the dismantling of Francoist monuments.

Persons laying claim to the confiscated artefacts may submit an application to the Ministry of Culture, which undertakes to consider each claim individually
