Miniatures from the "Visions of Tundale" (The Visions of the Knight Tondal), a fifteenth-century illuminated manuscript created by Simon Marmion around 1470 for Margaret of York, wife of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. This twelfth-century Irish text tells of a knight named Tondal (Tundale), who undergoes a mystical journey of the soul through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise, after which he returns to life and turns to the path of virtue.

Simon Marmion (c. 1425–1489) was one of the most celebrated artists of the late Gothic Burgundian school, working in Lille, Valenciennes and Ghent. His style combines the realism of the Northern Renaissance with the mystical vision of the Middle Ages. For the "Visions of the Knight Tondal" Marmion created some 20 miniatures, depicting scenes of hell with elaborate punishments for sinners, purgatory, where souls are cleansed through suffering, and paradise, full of light, harmony and angelic figures.
