# A miniature of the Holy Family, dated 1450, shows Saint Joseph preparing a meal for the Virgin and Christ

A miniature of the Holy Family, dated 1450, shows Saint Joseph preparing a meal for the Virgin and Christ. An angel hallows the scene with the presence of the heavenly world.

According to tradition, while living in Egypt with the Virgin Mary and Christ, Joseph earned their keep by working as a carpenter, but as a rule he provides for the family by his labour, rather than by cooking directly, as in the case of this subject.

Such references belong to the apocryphal corpus of texts, the «Gospel of the Infancy» and the «History of Joseph the Carpenter». It is, admittedly, more common to come across the image of the child Jesus helping with the household chores: the washing, the hearth and the serving of the table.
