Maslenitsa is bound up with the cult of the dead and the cult of ancestors, as, indeed, are almost all East Slavic festivals. One can observe this, for instance, in the symbolism of the blin, the lunar disc, or in the custom of the first blin, which was left on the windowsill or given to the poor. This is, come to think of it, just the moment to recall Neil Gaiman's “American Gods”, in whose novella about the Slavic divine Zoryas the Moon also appears, though no longer in analogy with food but in analogy with a silver coin, which one of the Zoryas presents to Shadow as an amulet of very powerful protection.
