# Beloved Jambul

Bust of the Kazakh akyn Zhambyl Zhabayev, red sandstone, by the sculptor Ivan Andreyev, 1939.

From the exhibition "The Road to the East. Russian Artists in Central Asia" at the New Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val.

Andreyev was a pupil of Iosif Chaikov and Alexander Matveyev, and was killed in the Great Patriotic War. Besides the bust of Jambul, the Tretyakov Gallery holds Andreyev's portrait of Zhabayev's friend and comrade-in-arms, the outstanding Kazakh composer and dombra player Dina Nurpeisova, also from 1939.
