Leafing through old newspapers, I came across a mention of Princess Theodora Romanov, widow of Prince Dmitri Romanovich, head of the House of Romanov and great-great-grandson of Nicholas I. A most attractive woman who looks wonderful for her 78 years, the Princess was born Dorrit Reventlow, of an ancient Danish comital family. Dorrit was born in 1942 in a small town in the north of Brazil. This is what caught my interest, since it brought to mind another well-known bearer of the same surname: Ernst Reventlow, a representative of the Nazi party in the German Reichstag. Latin America, the 1940s… could it be a coincidence? Well, I had to dig through the genealogical tables. And it turned out that the head of the humanitarian "Romanov Fund for Russia", Princess Theodora Romanov, is indeed a relation of the titled Nazi Reventlow. True, their common ancestor, Christian Detlev Reventlow, a Danish privy councillor, knight and chamberlain, was found in the distant eighteenth century, between 1710 and 1775\.
