For the 250th anniversary of the United States, the State Department will issue a special print run of passports bearing Trump's face and signature on the inside cover, over the text of the Declaration of Independence. American passports have never before carried a living president. Trump's name has already [appeared](https://theparnassian.com/tsentr-kennedi-iziashchno-prevrashchaetsia-iziashchno-prevrashchaetsia-v-tramp-kennedi-tsentr/?ref=theparnassian.com) on the [Kennedy Center building](https://theparnassian.com/tramp-pokazal-rendery-zdaniia-tramp-kennedi-tsentra-i-bolshe-vsego-eto-pokhozhe-na-tretiakovku-na-krymskom-valu/?ref=theparnassian.com), his signature on banknotes, and now passports. What remains is to amend the electoral legislation, but that too is not far off.

One would rather not compare the pranks of an elderly estate agent with what happened in 44 BC, when Julius Caesar became the first in Rome to place his own portrait on coins, after which the Roman emperors made it the standard of minting. Rather, one is reminded of the dictators of the twentieth century: Hitler, Mussolini, Idi Amin, Saddam, Mobutu, Bokassa, the Assads and Gaddafi all calmly put their faces on banknotes and building façades.

According to the historians of passports at Georgetown University, however, no country in the world has ever placed a sitting head of state on the pages of a passport. Only Trump has reached for the passports. The inner pages of passports were previously reserved exclusively for national symbols, coats of arms, historical scenes or quotations, but never for the face of a living ruler, and, for the time being, a replaceable one.
