The merchant Grigory Grigoryevich Yeliseyev, one of the richest men in the country and grandson of the founder of a famous trading dynasty, managed to leave Russia in 1920; by then he had property and accounts abroad and had no difficulty arranging his life. But not all of his children shared his happy fate: the eldest son, Grigory, stayed behind and was shot in 1938.

When Yeliseyev senior died in Paris in 1949, his multimillion fortune passed to his far from few heirs. One of his granddaughters, Anastasia Grigoryevna (1909-2001), who lived in the USSR, inherited several million francs but decided to renounce them. Still, where it mattered, she was swiftly talked round: she was to accept the inheritance and hand it over to the state, not to her French relatives. She did exactly that. Out of the enormous sum, Anastasia Grigoryevna was allotted 16,000 roubles, which was enough to buy a «Pobeda» car.
