A previously unknown painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir has been sold at auction in Paris for a considerable sum.

The painting, "L’enfant et ses jouets - Gabrielle et le fils de l’artiste, Jean" ("The Child and His Toys - Gabrielle and the Artist's Son, Jean"), depicts the young Jean Renoir playing with his nanny Gabrielle. Painted around 1910, the work was never published or exhibited, yet it has come down to us in excellent condition and required no restoration.

The whereabouts of the painting remained unknown for a long time. Renoir gave it to his pupil and close friend Jeanne Baudot, who became Jean's godmother in 1895\. After her death, "L’enfant et ses jouets" passed to her adopted son and heir Jean Griot. He hung the painting in his bedroom, where it remained until his death in 2011\. Two days ago a private collector acquired the work at auction for €1.8 million.

Renoir produced several versions of the image of Gabrielle and Jean in 1895–1896\. One of them is kept in the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. Another version, which also once belonged to Jean Griot, has been in the National Gallery of Art in Washington since 1985\. In interviews, Jean Renoir, later a celebrated film director, recalled with warmth his childhood impressions of posing for his father. Jean Renoir died in 1979.
