Queen Elizabeth II, speaking by video link with young lifesavers, recalled that in 1941 she had received a medal for her water-rescue training and had been very proud of it. Princess Elizabeth wore the badge constantly on her swimming costume, never suspecting that she had become the first child in the history of the Commonwealth to receive this award. During the conversation the deputy head of the Royal Life Saving Society remarked: "When you say it was a long time ago, Your Majesty, it is worth noting that it was 80 years ago." The 95-year-old Queen laughed and said: "That's dreadful!"
