The thanks are for the War of the Sixth Coalition of 1813-1814, and specifically for the fact that Russia did not stop after driving Napoleon from its territory in December 1812, but went on to liberate Europe. Had Russia made peace with Napoleon on its own borders in December 1812, as was discussed in Petersburg, Prussia would have remained within the Tilsit system, occupied, without an army, without territories. Eastern Europe would have gone on living under Napoleon for who knows how long.

Alexander I insisted on continuing the war against the advice of Kutuzov, who held that Russian blood should not be shed for European interests.
