Of course, Trump will present the election of an American Pope as his own victory. But Cardinal Robert Prevost, who became Pope under the name of Leo XIV, is not the American pontiff the White House would have dreamed of.

Given that his elevation owes much to the favour of Pope Francis, under whom he received his Vatican post and his cardinal's hat, he is more likely to continue Francis's course. Francis, if you remember, criticised Trump constantly. Notably on the question of [migration](https://theparnassian.com/na-svoe-85-letie-papa-frantsisk-podaril-italii-10-migrantov-kotorykh-perevez-vchera-s-kipra/?ref=theparnassian.com), just as Cardinal Prevost does.

In his opening address Leo XIV called for building bridges. But these will plainly not be bridges between the different camps of the Catholic clergy, a considerable part of which was categorically opposed to Francis's course of loosening dogma and traditional foundations.

Although he is written about as a centrist, something tells me that the most left-leaning candidate possible was elected after all. It would have been another matter had the Pope been a different American, the ardent conservative [Cardinal Raymond Burke](https://theparnassian.com/odin-iz-samykh-konservativnykh-episkopov-ssha-kardinal-reimond-leo-berk-v-traditsionnom-pyshnom-episkopalnom-odeianii-cappa-magna/?ref=theparnassian.com). But he was precisely the cardinal in disgrace, as a man who had contradicted Francis. Such a man could hardly have been elected by an [absolute majority](https://theparnassian.com/konklav-kotoryi-ozhidaetsia-7-maia-vo-mnogom-proidet-po-novomu-prichem-blagodaria-deistviiam-papy-frantsiska/?ref=theparnassian.com) of cardinals appointed by Francis.

And given that Leo XIV is a fairly young Pope and, besides, a part of the pro-reform Vatican bureaucracy, it is roughly clear what course he will follow in his pontificate.
