The Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez was a close friend of the singer Shakira and admired her work, saying that the personal stamp in her music made her unlike anything else, and that Shakira performs, dances and sings with a particular sensuality that seems to have been invented by her. In his day, García Márquez even broke a vow of silence in order to address Shakira in an essay. It must be said that Shakira is not merely a pop star of the 1990s: throughout her life, being Colombian by birth, she has been active in charity work in Colombia and has promoted philanthropy among Colombian celebrities. In 2008 Shakira was to have played the leading role in the film based on García Márquez's novel "Love in the Time of Cholera", but she declined because of a nude scene in which she would have appeared. Little known is the fact that Shakira is the niece of Meira Delmar, a well-known Colombian poetess and a very close friend of García Márquez, which may well have been the basis of the acquaintance and friendship between the singer and the writer.
