The bell tower of the Strastnoy Monastery, demolished in 1937, was used in the Soviet years for anti-religious propaganda and for advertising Communist ideas: the monastery had been closed since 1919 and housed the Central Anti-Religious Museum.

The monastery's first gate church was built by order of Tsaritsa Natalya Kirillovna Naryshkina in 1697-1707\. The bell tower was rebuilt in 1849-1855 by the architect Mikhail Bykovsky.

In 1937 the convent was destroyed. All the monastery's buildings were blown up and broken down for brick. In 1950 the monument to Pushkin was moved to the site of the bell tower.
