"When the Roman Empire fell, it was in large part the result of uncontrolled immigration. The empire could no longer control its borders ..and Europe sank into the Dark Ages, which lasted a very long time. ..it could happen again"

The Prime Minister of Britain has warned of the fatal consequences of climate change, citing the fall of Rome as his example. According to Boris Johnson, the coming climate catastrophes will bring terrible geopolitical consequences, including mass migration and competition for food and water.

Johnson has laid bare the gulf between the popular understanding of late antiquity and modern scholarly research. Should one begin to doubt the quality of education at Eton and Oxford, or may allowance be made for the speaker's populism?

One would still like to believe that he is acquainted with the works of Edward Gibbon and Ammianus Marcellinus. Be that as it may, to say that migrants brought about the collapse of a Rome built on violence and slavery is a gross manipulation, just as it is to call the Ostrogoths, Vandals and other Germanic tribes "immigrants"
