# When Helen Rogers Reid, editor of the New York Herald Tribune, asked Churchill at a White House dinner about British colonisation and the fate of the Indians, touching on the then much-discussed question of Indian independence, he replied:

Yet when Churchill's stronger remarks about the peoples colonised by Britain are quoted, such as the comparison of the inhabitants of India to beasts, his grandson, the former Conservative MP Nicholas Soames, calls criticism of his grandfather's rhetoric ridiculous, observing that he was a child of the Edwardian era and therefore spoke its language.
