Crown Prince Peter Karageorgevich of Serbia, the elder son of Prince Alexander Karageorgevich and grandson of King Peter II of Yugoslavia, has renounced his right to the Serbian throne, for himself and his descendants, in favour of his younger brother, Prince Philip. He has not, however, given up his name, his title or his duties as a member of the Royal House.

Peter explained that he considers it essential for a future King of Serbia to live in his own country among his own people. And in this, beyond doubt, the advantage lies with his younger brother Philip, who lives in Serbia permanently, married a Serbian woman in Serbia, and has a son by her, the first male of the Karageorgevich dynasty in ninety years to be born on that soil. The renunciation took effect upon signing, and Crown Prince Alexander and the head of the Serbian Church, Patriarch Porfirije, have been notified.

Peter plans to remain in Seville, while Philip leads a quiet life in a modest house in Belgrade, earning his living by his own labour and promising to restore the monarchy.
