Brave soldier, triumphant victor, eminent commander and darling of France, Marshal Ney was the very man who had persuaded Bonaparte, his patron, to abdicate the throne, and had himself taken a seat on the military council of Louis XVIII. When Napoleon returned from the island of Elba, Ney promised Louis to bring Bonaparte back alive or dead, but at the first opportunity he hastened to join his former commander-in-chief and placed his troops at Napoleon's disposal.
