The centaurs descend from the first of men to kill a kinsman, namely King Ixion, who did not wish to pay his father-in-law the bride-price for his beautiful daughter and pushed him into a fire pit covered over with planks. For this dreadful crime Ixion was punished with madness, but was later forgiven and invited to a feast of the gods, where he conceived a desire for Hera, in whose place Zeus palmed him off with a cloud in Hera's likeness. From this union came all the centaurs in the world
