The string of absurd updates to the file on the disgraceful Louvre robbery seems destined never to end. New glaring details have come to light, but the chief detail remains unchanged: so far, we have not seen a single resignation.

How about this? A month and a half before the Louvre was robbed, the Paris police warned the museum's management of serious security problems, pointing to outdated and inadequate equipment.

The report, handed over on 29 August, stated that all the security measures were, to put it mildly, out of date and unsuited to such enormous premises. The experts noted that the equipment and computers available to the security service were obsolete, and that the software did not allow all the cameras to be monitored. The central control room, in the authors' view, was not powerful enough to cope with a major incident.

The report proposed a complete overhaul of the museum's security system, especially the video surveillance. But nobody, it seems, read these documents; far more pressing were the half-million estimates for converting the canteen into a cafeteria for VIP guests and the gender protocols of personnel policy.
