Every ten years a gala luncheon is given in honour of Elizabeth II for heads of state: in 2002 with the leaders of Europe, in 2012 with the rulers of the world. And in any company, of course, there will turn up certain characters who plant themselves with their shanks splayed, spread their never-quite-closing thighs without the slightest embarrassment in the presence of venerable ladies, and sprawl as if they were at a schoolfellow's birthday party at the Casa Bonita restaurant. Of course, everyone nearby will treat this want of elementary notions of etiquette in representatives of the less enlightened states with understanding or silent regret. Indeed, what can one demand of the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam or the King of Swaziland? But do look how dreadful it appears!
