Sychkov was born into a poor peasant family and finished the three-class zemstvo school in his village. He began to draw in an icon-painting workshop. As so often happens with village artists, having learned his craft from an icon painter in town, Sychkov returned to his native village and went on painting icons, church frescoes and portraits of his fellow villagers. But Fedot Vasilyevich was lucky: General Arapov commissioned a picture from him, and it became Sychkov's ticket to another life. The canvas was seen by the director of a drawing school, who recommended sending the artist to Petersburg. The general took this noble undertaking upon himself, brought the young artist to the capital and helped him to enrol in the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. Sychkov completed the course, entered the Higher Art School at the Academy of Arts and, on finishing it, received the title of artist.

By the early 1900s Sychkov was already a fairly well-known artist: he took part in the exhibitions of the Wanderers, showed his work abroad, travelled and received awards. In the end he could be considered an artist of world renown. And yet he returned once more to his homeland and went on painting portraits of simple peasants, village festivals and subjects from the life of the common people.
