The project is called "Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan. The Return". The display will include, among other things, studies and sketches reflecting the artist's long search for the composition, the types and the historical details. Archive documents will show the chronicle of the first attack on the painting in 1913 and tell the story of its restoration.

In May 2018 Repin's work was seriously damaged by a 37-year-old man who had come from the Voronezh Region. He smashed the glass of the painting with a metal barrier and damaged the canvas. The canvas was torn in three places, and the artist's own frame suffered too. The man explained his act by saying that he "was outraged by the content of the painting", "because everything in the painting is a lie". The Zamoskvoretsky Court of Moscow sentenced him to two and a half years in a general-regime penal colony.

The painting will now be displayed in a specially constructed climate-controlled anti-vandal capsule. The exhibition will be open to visitors from 17 December 2024 to 2 November 2025.
