Edvard Munch's painting Summer Night on the Beach, executed in 1902, is a profound immersion in the atmosphere of Scandinavian melancholy. The canvas shows a deserted shore at Åsgårdstrand, the place where the artist spent his summer months and found inspiration for his most emotional works. Instead of a traditional landscape, Munch creates a psychological space in which the motionless surface of the water, the pale light of the northern sun that never quite sets and the characteristic column-shaped path of moonlight convey a sense of absolute solitude and silence. The work belongs to the mature period of the master's career, when he was moving away from sharp expressionism towards more symbolic and contemplative images of nature, reflecting the inner state of man
