# A painting of 1892 depicts Napoleone della Torre (Napo della Torre), leader of the Guelphs and scion of the Milanese dynasty of Della Torre

The Milanese ruler of the Torriani family had brought several Lombard cities under his sway from 1265, but in January 1277 he was defeated in battle by the hostile forces of the Visconti. Napoleone and his relatives were taken prisoner by Archbishop Ottone Visconti.

Confined in an iron cage hung from the tower of the Baradello castle in Como, Napoleone della Torre died of hunger on 16 August 1278 after 19 months of captivity. This put an end to the rule of the Della Torre in Milan
