Caravaggio painted the Virgin Mary from Rome's most famous prostitute, Maddalena Antognetti, known as Lena, yet her child is the very embodiment of holy simplicity, for he is not to blame for his mother's transgressions, and he even tramples the symbol of sin. The canvas even managed to hang in the church of Sant'Anna, though only for two days, until the parishioners and priests alike had made out the courtesan in the guise of the Madonna. Happily, a wealthy member of the Borghese family bought the picture with delight, and it is still displayed in his gallery today
