As such, parures reached the height of their popularity in the early nineteenth century: in the 1800s it was precisely sets of jewellery that adorned ladies in Europe's principal capitals. This fashion owed a great deal to the jewellers of the future house of Chaumet, which over its entire history has created only some 3,500 diadems. What distinguishes a suite from a mere heap of jewels is that it was made for a particular gown and was paraded together with it. Not always, of course, were these hundred-carat diamond squadrons, as in Josephine's case. Quite often they were made of semi-precious stones and not the costliest metals, with the use of mosaics or cameos.

One of the most famous parures in history is Napoleon I's wedding gift to his second wife, Marie Louise of Austria, from the workshop of "Étienne Nitot et Fils". The diadem, earrings, necklace and comb of emeralds and diamonds set in gold and silver are, alas, not on show at the Chaumet exhibition, because in 1953 the parure was bought from Marie Louise's heirs by the house of Van Cleef & Arpels.
