The klobuk is not only a monk's headdress: it is also the name of the little cap placed on a hunting bird, covering its eyes completely and its ears in part. The hood is needed to calm the bird, to protect it and to cut it off from distracting influences. Hoods are used for hawks, falcons, gyrfalcons and golden eagles.

The process of accustoming a bird to the hood is called *isklobuchivaniye* (hooding). A falcon trained to wear the hood is called a *podkablutchnik*. Thus, contrary to folk etymology, the *pokablutchniki* are not "under the heel" (*pod kablukom*), but tamed to the hood. When required, the hood is removed, and the bird, its sight of the world restored, finds itself intent on the very target its master desires.

The photographs show birds-of-prey hoods by the master craftsman Giancarlo Pirotta, from the collection of the Hunting Museum in Paris
