How can gallery-goers who linger before a single picture at a private view help art? A visitor to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York [noticed](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/21/arts/design/jacob-lawrence-painting-found.html?ref=theparnassian.com) that the exhibition “Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle” was missing several paintings from the master's celebrated series “Struggle: From the History of the American People” (1954-1956). But she did not merely notice: she recalled that one of the absent works might belong to her neighbours, and the painting did indeed turn up in their house. They had bought it at a charity auction 60 years ago.
