As a dacha-dweller, I would add that many regard the lily as a poisonous plant. At any rate, certain varieties can be highly toxic, for cats, for example. There are reports that a cat which has drunk water containing lily sap, or licked lily pollen from its fur, may be seriously poisoned and die. Lily pollen causes headaches in humans, too.

In the 1920s there was a tale going round that when the silent-film actress Vera Kholodnaya caught a chill and took to her bed, her admirers, knowing her love of lilies, quite literally buried the sick woman's room in these flowers, which could have provoked a severe allergic reaction, leading to complications and the death of the 25-year-old actress.
