# On the news of three days ago that the 198-year-old Turgenev Oak has been struck off the European "Tree of the Year" competition

On the news of three days ago that the 198-year-old Turgenev Oak has been struck off the European “Tree of the Year” competition. Every outlet illustrates the report with a photograph of the fallen tree. The oak, planted by Turgenev, was damaged in a storm in November 2021\. By that time it had already been entered for the European competition as the winner of the all-Russian one. However, there was a [report](https://rg.ru/2021/12/02/chto-teper-budet-s-turgenevskim-dubom.html?ref=theparnassian.com) that the European commission had decided not to withdraw the tree from the competition: “After all, the competition draws attention not only to the care and preservation of trees, but also to their vulnerability. The fate of our oak illustrates precisely this not altogether simple point. So the Turgenev Oak will remain a participant in the competition and will fight for victory, come what may.” As we see, the words “come what may” proved, after all, a considerable exaggeration
