Italy and Denmark have issued a clear and bold letter, already signed by other European countries: Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and the Czech Republic.

The text of the letter runs roughly as follows:

> We are obliged to protect our citizens, our values, our democracy. We are the leaders of societies that defend human rights, yet all too often the European Convention on Human Rights is interpreted in such a way that it prevents states from expelling foreign criminals or defending their borders. We cannot accept this.

> To this end, we jointly ask for:
> • Greater autonomy at the national level in deciding on the expulsion of foreign nationals who have committed crimes;
> • Greater freedom in controlling those who cannot be repatriated;
> • An end to the use of rights as a weapon against our borders.

> Protecting rights also means protecting security, the rule of law, freedom.
