# The Early Renaissance Italian painter Guido di Pietro, known as the "blessed angelic brother" Fra Angelico, has been canonised and is regarded as the patron saint of artists

He made his name through his altar paintings. Fra Angelico's most famous subject is the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary. The first altarpiece of this series was painted for the church of San Domenico di Fiesole and is now kept in the Prado.

The painting shows the Virgin with the Archangel Gabriel on an open loggia in a garden. Above them is the face of God in a medallion. In the background the Archangel Michael drives the sinful Adam and Eve out of Paradise.

Built on the juxtaposition of man's fall and the conception of the redeemer of human sins, the composition was repeated many times, by Fra Angelico himself and by other painters.

My favourite of Beato Angelico's Annunciations is the Annunciation from Cortona, in which golden words fly out of the archangel's mouth.
