A remark that struck me as interesting, on the macabre concert given on Sunday by Metropolitan Theologos of Serres of the Greek Orthodox Church at the Monastery of Saint Paraskevi:.

Unfortunately, we see that for several decades now, in a supposedly Christian Europe, conditions have been created that promote a model of life without God, without values, without rules and principles, without respect, without measure, without the fragrance of life, without beauty, the very principles and values which Greece taught the world.

Today a way of life is systematically promoted in which the self-referential and passionate human being becomes a value unto himself, an idol, a pitiful imitation of himself. Lawlessness is called freedom, and disrespect is called a right of expression. Today, from the dark abyss of human passions there arises a world in which moral decline reigns, together with harsh egoism, materialism, the trampling of the Divine and even of the laws of nature, criminality, amorality, nihilism, the levelling of everything and the absence of elementary respect. All this creates and entrenches in present-day reality a profound decline that exudes decay and death. What happened the day before yesterday, during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, in that particular performance, was deeply provocative, disrespectful, tasteless, offensive to the faith of millions of people across the world, to aesthetics and to the very spirit of the Olympic Games.

One wonders whether these particular "artists" and the host country would dare to behave in such an unacceptable manner towards any other religion. Unfortunately, Europe has for decades been turning away from Christ, demonstratively and with excessive ingratitude...

Yet today the world needs so much, above all whole and balanced role models, illumined by the light of Christ, inspired by quality and a respectful ethos, by a pure soul and word, by a readiness for sincere repentance, compassion and mutual understanding. Humanity needs such healthy role models, especially today. From the highest principles of love for God and love for humankind.
