The interiors of Highclere Castle in Hampshire, ancestral seat of the Earls of Carnarvon, built in the early seventeenth century and rebuilt in 1838–1878, may be seen not only in the series "Downton Abbey", which made the castle famous, but also in the comedy film "King Ralph", in which a portly American klutz becomes heir to the English crown. The scenes shown here are set in the castle's library, which houses thousands of rare books, beginning with specimens of the sixteenth century. Above the library fireplace hangs a portrait of Henry, the first Earl of Carnarvon, so it turns out that an Earl of Carnarvon has also appeared in a popular series. The script of "Downton Abbey" was written with Highclere in mind from the very start, for Julian Fellowes has been a friend of the Carnarvons for many years. But the neo-Gothic opulence of this castle can be glimpsed in other films too: in Jeeves and Wooster, in Woody Allen's Match Point, in the BBC's Kings and Queens, and in a good many others besides.
