Illustrations of craftsmen from a fifteenth-century manuscript commissioned by the Mendel family of Nuremberg, founders of an almshouse for elderly masters. Later, other families who owned workshops also commissioned similar registers of their craftsmen. The mail-maker bends wire, while a finished shirt of mail hangs limp on the wall; the smith has enormous shears for sheet metal, fixed to a work block so that they can be operated with one hand.

The portraits depict not only some part of the technological process, the tools and details of production, but also document the personal peculiarities of the masters, as, for example, in the drawing of a rosary hung on the bench of a sarozhnik \[?\], a man known for his piety and for reciting 800 prayers a day.
