George Sand suggested the idea of the novel "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" to Jules Verne, proposing in a letter of 1865 that he write a book about a voyage across the ocean in a submarine.

In Russian translation the novel appeared under various titles:

One Hundred Thousand Versts. A Journey Round the World Under Water, Under Ice, and Amid the Vanished Atlantis - in 1872;
80,000 Kilometres Beneath the Waves of the Ocean - in 1927;
80,000 Kilometres Under Water - in 1933;
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. A Journey Round the World in the Depths of the Sea - in 1956.
