# An Idea for the Met Gala

An idea for the Met Gala. The madcap hairstyle of this Roman lady, which resembles a wasps' nest, was the last word in fashion in the Flavian era, when the women of Rome at last abandoned the plain parting, the single-coloured headscarf, the plait or the straight hair in favour of especially elaborate constructions of hair, such as a tower on the crown of the head or, as in this variant, a kokoshnik of dense curls. The construction of curls could be fastened to a metal or other framework and sometimes reached a height of 30 to 40 centimetres. Similar hairstyles are found in many collections of antiquities: in the Capitoline Museums and in the Getty collection alike, while this bust of the late 1st century AD comes from the Allard Pierson archaeological museum in Amsterdam. That the portrait is nevertheless a funerary one is indicated by the acanthus leaves framing the bust
