# I have told this story before, but in view of the alternative news I shall repeat myself

In 1913 a number of English-language newspapers carried an article reporting that several chambers of a temple-like character had been discovered inside the Great Sphinx. The text claimed that a fairly large room existed both inside the head and inside the body, and that in one of these chambers small pyramids had been set up. An illustration of the chambers and passages inside the statue was supplied as well, for example a drawing from the British newspaper The Sphere of 27 March 1913\. The chambers were called sanctuaries and, with reference to one of the founders of Egyptology, Professor George Reisner, were said to be dedicated to the Sun. It was asserted that there were several entrances into the statue: on the head, at the back and in the region of the forepaws.

Professor Reisner himself, who had supposedly discovered the secret temples, came out in the press with a denial of this news, declaring that he had never carried out any archaeological work on the Sphinx and had no permission to do so. It had all begun with an article in Cosmopolitan, for which Reisner had indeed given a comment on the Sphinx, but he had come nowhere near speaking of sensational discoveries or of the hypothesis that temples lay inside the Sphinx, together with the tomb of the first Egyptian pharaoh, Menes.

However, as so often happens, the denial did not lodge itself in the public memory.

Besides the illustrations from the sensational article, accounts keep surfacing from people who claim to have been inside the Sphinx and who describe the chambers and shafts they visited in person. There are also several photographs confirming the existence of entrances into the statue. But science is silent about these testimonies.

Well, if a second Sphinx is found, then we are probably close to one of the most sensational discoveries in history: the detection of secret underground structures beneath the Sphinxes, the very possibility of which official science has for many years persuasively denied. And that means that yet another so-called conspiracy theory may be confirmed before our very eyes.
