I try to write honestly and to be worthy of having my pictures hung in the hallway of a house where Cézanne and Renoir will hang.

Renoir called Gustave Caillebotte the Joan of Arc of painting: the scion of a wealthy family, an engineer who gave himself to art without reserve and became one of the significant painters of his time, Caillebotte assembled a colossal collection of the Impressionists and devoted much energy to organising and staging their exhibitions.

The Musée d'Orsay has just opened an exhibition devoted to Caillebotte, his legacy and the collection that he bequeathed to the state. The French Republic, however, saw fit to accept only 38 canvases out of 68\. The remainder of the bequest was sold off.

The work of this original artist, scarcely known until then, acquired worldwide fame only in the 1960s, when the Art Institute of Chicago bought the large canvas "Paris Street; Rainy Day", and art historians, critics and collectors turned their attention to Caillebotte's legacy: an almost instantaneous surge of interest in a forgotten name followed.
