I have been to the Georges de La Tour exhibition "Between Shadow and Light" at the Musée Jacquemart-André five times, and each time there was a queue at the door, but if I could get in once more, I would gladly go. So I am determined not to miss the new exhibition of Gerard van Honthorst, "Gherardo delle Notti", in Utrecht. Van Honthorst, a contemporary of La Tour and likewise a Caravaggist, explored effects of light and shade. Indeed, the very title of the exhibition plays on the theme of his beloved night scenes and alludes to the technique of tenebrism, which was developed by La Tour and van Honthorst alike.

For "Gherardo of the Night", one of the chief Utrecht Caravaggists, the candle also often becomes the principal source of light on the canvas, but unlike La Tour's, his sources of light are less mystical intermediaries than moral accusers.

The exhibition at the Jacquemart-André was not very large: a little over twenty masterpieces by La Tour, which allowed visitors to become acquainted with his incredible manner of rendering light metaphysically. The Centraal Museum in Utrecht is showing around 60 paintings and 30 drawings by Gerrit van Honthorst from the world's largest collections: the Louvre, the Galleria Borghese, the British Royal Collection. And given the view that La Tour may have become acquainted with the work of the Utrecht Caravaggists, van Honthorst among them, during a trip to Utrecht in 1616, and inherited in his own art from the Dutch masters rather than from Caravaggio himself, this exhibition may have a stunning effect.

The photograph from the exhibition shows two paintings of the Mocking of Christ from van Honthorst's earliest period. On Good Friday in Jerusalem, immediately after the trial before the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who ordered Jesus to be scourged, Christ is led away into the praetorium and they begin to mock Him cruelly. Van Honthorst has several canvases on this theme. It is held that this very version exerted a colossal influence on Northern European Baroque, becoming a model for such masters as his pupil Matthias Stom, Hendrick ter Brugghen and even the young Rembrandt
